Travel Essentials for Thailand
Thailand is one of the easiest countries to travel in Southeast Asia, but packing the right items can make your trip much smoother. Whether you’re island hopping in the south, exploring temples in Bangkok, or trekking in the north, this Thailand packing list covers the essentials that made my trip easier.
These are the items I found most useful during my trip:
- Travel backpack – lightweight and perfect for island hopping between destinations
- Packing cubes – helps keep clothes organised when moving between hotels
- Waterproof phone pouch – essential for boat trips, snorkelling, and beach days
- Portable power bank – long travel days and boat tours often mean limited charging
- Sunscreen – the sun in Thailand is strong, especially on the islands
- Quick-dry travel towel – perfect for beach days and island hopping
IMPORTANT
- Travel vaccinations – before traveling to Thailand, it’s recommended to check routine travel vaccinations. Requirements vary depending on your home country and medical history, so it’s always best to consult a travel clinic or your doctor before departure.
- Travel insurance – it is one of the most important things to arrange before a trip to Southeast Asia. Thailand is generally safe, but accidents, unexpected illness, or cancelled flights can happen anywhere.
- eSIM – one of the easiest travel upgrades is using an eSIM instead of a physical SIM card. You can install it before your trip and have mobile data as soon as you land – no airport queues or SIM swaps.
My Go-To Travel Hack: Airalo eSIM
I never travel without Airalo eSIM anymore! It’s honestly one of my biggest travel hacks. No more hunting for SIM cards at the airport or stressing about roaming charges — you just download it before your trip and you’re connected as soon as you land.
It works in 200+ countries and makes everything easier — from Google Maps to booking last-minute spots and sharing your travels in real time.
Clothing to Pack for Thailand
Thailand is hot and humid year-round, so lightweight and breathable clothing is essential.
Recommended clothing:
- Lightweight dresses or loose trousers
- Breathable t-shirts or tank tops
- Shorts or skirts
- Swimsuits (at least two)
- Flip-flops or sandals
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Light rain jacket (especially during rainy season)
- Sunglasses and a hat
Tip: When visiting temples in Thailand, you must cover your shoulders and knees, so it’s helpful to pack a light scarf or long skirt.
Toiletries & Health Items
Most toiletries can be bought in Thailand, but it’s helpful to bring some basics:
- Insect repellent
- Hand sanitizer
- Basic medications (pain relief, stomach medicine)
- After-sun lotion
- Electrolyte tablets
Mosquito repellent is especially important if you plan to visit jungles, national parks, or northern Thailand.
Beach & Island Essentials
If you’re planning to visit islands like Phuket, Krabi, or Koh Phi Phi, these items are especially useful:
- Sunscreen
- Snorkel mask
- Waterproof dry bag
- Beach cover-up
- Reusable water bottle
Optional But Very Useful Items
These are not essential, but they made my trip much easier:
- Kindle or e-reader for flights and beach days
- Small crossbody bag for city exploring
- Portable luggage scale
- Travel laundry detergent sheets
- Camera or GoPro for island adventures
