Where to stay in NYC: best areas and hotels for every budget

Where to Stay in NYC: Best Areas & Hotels for Every Budget (2026 Guide)

New York City is one of my favourite places in the world — but choosing where to stay in NYC can feel challenging, especially with so many neighbourhoods that all offer something completely different. But it really comes down to location and budget. Here’s a simple breakdown to help you decide.

In this guide, I’m sharing the best areas to stay in New York, along with hotel recommendations and honest tips from my own trips — so you can find the perfect base for your stay, whether it’s your first time or a return visit.

Best areas to stay in New York City

Midtown Manhattan – best for first time visitors

If it’s your first time in New York, Midtown is the most convenient base. You’ll be within walking distance of iconic landmarks like Times Square, Central Park, and Rockefeller Center.

Why stay here:

  • Central location
  • Excellent subway connections
  • Close to major attractions

Midtown is busy and energetic — perfect if you want that classic NYC experience.

Lower Manhattan – best for a stylish, boutique stay

Lower Manhattan includes areas like SoHo, the Financial District, and Tribeca. It feels more stylish and less tourist-heavy than Midtown. You’ll be close to the Statue of Liberty ferry, One World Observatory, and beautiful cobblestone streets in SoHo.

Why stay here:

  • Trendy cafés and boutiques
  • More local atmosphere
  • Great restaurants and photo spots

This is personally my favourite area — it feels more “New York chic” and less chaotic.

Brooklyn (DUMBO & Williamsburg) – best for trendy vibes and skyline views

Brooklyn offers incredible Manhattan skyline views and a slightly slower pace. You’ll still have easy access to Manhattan via subway, but with a more relaxed, creative atmosphere.

Why stay here:

  • Iconic Brooklyn Bridge views
  • Rooftop bars
  • Trendy brunch spots
  • Slightly better value for space

If you love photography, Brooklyn is magical at golden hour.

Where to Stay in NYC for First-Time Visitors

If it’s your first time in New York City, I always recommend staying in Midtown Manhattan.

It might not be the trendiest area, but it’s hands down the most convenient. You’re within walking distance (or a short subway ride) to major attractions like Times Square, Central Park, the Empire State Building, and Broadway — which makes a huge difference, especially if you’re only in NYC for a few days.

When I first visited, staying in Midtown made everything feel so easy and accessible. It’s busy, yes — but that’s also part of the New York experience.

Final Thoughts: Where I’d Stay in NYC

If I had to choose, I’d stay in SoHo or the West Village — every single time.

For me, it’s the perfect balance of everything I love about New York: beautiful streets, amazing food, a more relaxed atmosphere, and still close enough to all the main sights. It feels a bit more “local” and less overwhelming than Midtown, which makes such a difference after a busy day exploring.

That said, if it’s your first trip or you’re only in NYC for a few days, Midtown Manhattan is still the most practical choice — you’ll save time, and everything is right on your doorstep.

At the end of the day, there’s no one “perfect” place to stay in New York — it really depends on your vibe, your budget, and the kind of trip you want. But hopefully, this guide makes choosing where to stay in NYC feel a lot easier.
