Where to Stay in Lapland (Rovaniemi): Best Hotels for a Magical Arctic Stay

Lapland feels like stepping into a real-life winter fairytale — snowy forests, reindeers, Northern Lights, and cozy nights by the fire. And honestly? Where you stay here is everything.

Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, is the best base for:

  • meeting Santa
  • Northern Lights hunting
  • husky & reindeer experiences
  • winter activities like snowmobiling and skiing

During my trip, I realised there are two types of stays you should consider:

  • unique Arctic experiences (glass igloos & design hotels)
  • cozy nature stays with views and quiet surroundings

Here are my favourite hotels in Rovaniemi — the ones I’d genuinely recommend (and rebook myself).

Unique Arctic Stays (Bucket List Experiences)

If you’re coming all the way to Lapland, I highly recommend staying somewhere special — even if just for one night. This is what makes the trip unforgettable.

Santa’s Igloos Arctic Circle

This is the Lapland dream.

Glass igloos, warm beds, and the chance to watch the Northern Lights from under your duvet — it doesn’t get more magical than this.

Each igloo has: heated glass roofs, cosy, modern interiors, incredible privacy in the forest. It’s definitely a splurge, but 100% worth it for the experience.

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel

One of the most Instagrammable stays in Lapland — and yes, it’s just as beautiful in real life.

Think: floor-to-ceiling windows, minimal Nordic design, forest views from your bed. It feels luxurious but still deeply connected to nature — which is exactly what Lapland is about.

Perfect balance between design hotel and Arctic experience.

Stylish & Central Hotels in Rovaniemi

If you want to be close to restaurants, tours, and city life — these are perfect.

Arctic Light Hotel

This is easily one of the best boutique hotels in Rovaniemi.

Located right in the city centre, it combines: modern luxury, cosy Lapland vibes and one of the best breakfasts (seriously — it’s famous). It’s perfect if you want comfort after long, cold adventure days.

Nature Escapes with Views

If your dream is waking up surrounded by snowy forests — this is your category.

Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara

This hotel is all about location and views.

Set on a hill just outside the city, you get: panoramic views over snowy forests, direct access to nature trails, a peaceful, secluded atmosphere.

It’s also a great spot for Northern Lights spotting away from city lights.

Feels like a hidden retreat, but still close to everything.

My Personal Recommendation

If I were planning it again, I’d do:

This way you get both the magic AND practicality

Tips for Booking Your Lapland Stay

  • Book early (VERY early) – Lapland sells out months in advance, especially Dec–Feb
  • Prices are high in peak season (Christmas & New Year)
  • Choose locations away from city lights if Northern Lights are a priority
  • Consider renting a car for flexibility (especially for nature stays)

Lapland – Rovaniemi Car Rental

I always recommend renting a car in Lapland — it’s honestly the best way to explore this winter wonderland at your own pace. For my trips, I use Klook car rentals because it’s easy to book, reliable, and gives you the freedom to reach all the magical spots beyond the main tourist areas.

From chasing the Northern Lights to visiting Santa Claus Village, taking husky and reindeer safaris, or driving through snowy forests to find hidden gems, having your own car completely transforms your Lapland experience. No strict schedules, no waiting for buses — just you, the road, and some of the most magical landscapes in the world.

Lapland isn’t just about what you do — it’s about how it feels. And your hotel plays a huge role in that.

Whether you’re sleeping under the Northern Lights or waking up in a quiet snowy forest, this is one of those trips where it’s worth choosing something a little special.
